The Payroll Tax Accountant II is responsible for payroll tax compliance and activities as well as accounting activities relating to the maintenance of a complete and accurate general ledger. Responsible for various aspects of accounting for the employee and company’s withholding and liability taxes, and general accounting transactions including monthly journal entries, account reconciliations


  • Ensure that all month-end accounting is performed in a timely and accurate manner with a high level of attention to detail. Ensure accurate and timely recording of all payroll activities into the general ledger. Prepare various month-end functions including preparation of supporting schedules and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Assist in departmental testing of People Soft upgrades and/or tax updates to ensure core business processes are met along with government compliances.
  • Review and respond to all state, government and local tax notices. Handle all system tax updates and/or corrections for all states and localities.  Run and review quarterly and year-end reports for tax data accuracy and compliance.  Process state and local ID number registrations and assist in system table configuration maintenance of tax and HR general ledger tables for accurate tax and labor reporting.

  • Communicate events or compliance changes that may affect funding accounts, processes, or accruals to Senior Payroll Accountant and/or Payroll Manager.
  • Assist with special projects and ad hoc requests.

Essential Requirements



  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent experience,          Advanced degree or CPA preferred


  • 2-4 years accounting experience preferably with a large corporation (volume in excess of $100M), retail experience, experience in journal entry preparation, auditing and balance sheet reconciliations required
  • Min 2 years in Tax Accountant role

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP

  • Proven organizational skills- ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong PC skills including Microsoft Office
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to meet tight deadlines
